Cook or Kitchen Helper (3 1/2- 4 month CONTRACT)

Who Are You?
We are currently seeking an individual to prep, cook and provide meals to our clients.  The successful candidate requires the ability to be pleasant, patient, compassionate and consistent with clients, staff and volunteers at all times. You will be required to work shifts that may vary between the hours of 5:30 am – 9:30 pm week to week. Your level of experience will determine whether you will be hired as a Kitchen Helper or a Cook. This position is a contract role for a term of 3 1/2 - 4 months starting mid-July, with the possibility of full time.

The Job

Cook responsibilities:

  • Assists with the day to day operation of the kitchen and to uphold the vision, mission, goals and the ethics of the organization
  • Conducts themselves in a professional manner and take the necessary steps to ensure their conduct does not negatively impact the view of the volunteers
  • Be responsible for preparation, cooking and assembly of all prepared food dishes which includes clean up afterwards
  • Assists in planning and developing a menu dependent on available ingredients
  • Operates a variety of industrial kitchen equipment, including knives, mixers, ovens and dishwasher
  • Ensures work stations are kept clean and sanitized in accordance with health regulations, including all kitchen surface areas, serving utensils, appliances and dishware, etc.
  • Be able to carry out all tasks related to closing down and reopening the kitchen
  • Assists with inventory (receiving, moving, storing, etc.)
  • Ensures food supplies are properly handled and properly stored at all times
  • Maintains a good working relationship with the Kitchen Manager and kitchen staff, other DI staff and management as well as client volunteers
  • Performs other related tasks that are approved by the Manager, Kitchen and the Directors

Kitchen Helper responsibilities:

  • Washes work tables, walls, refrigerators, and cutting boards
  • Washing dishes and utensils as required
  • Removes trash and garbage and places it in designated containers
  • Sweeps and mops floors
  • Washing kitchen equipment (pots, pans, trays)
  • Keeping work stations stocked and clean
  • Unload/move/organize incoming food orders, food donations, etc.
  • Assists in prepping food for meals
  • Maintains a good working relationship with the Kitchen Manager and kitchen staff, other DI staff and management as well as client volunteers
  • Performs other related tasks that are approved by the Manager, Kitchen and the Directors

Qualifications and Key Skills

Cook:

  • Minimum of two (2) years kitchen experience
  • Experience in bulk cooking for large numbers of people (i.e. social service kitchens or banquet cooking) is preferred 
  • Food Handlers Certificate
  • A diploma from a culinary arts or professional cooking program is an asset
  • Energetic and self-directed, with effective time management and organizational skills including the ability to deal with several priorities at the same time
  • Ability to lift and move heavy objects (equipment, incoming food, etc.) safely, up to 50 lbs.
  • Strong strategically-focused analytical skills, good common sense; and capacity to provide leadership
  • Well developed interpersonal skills and act as an integral, collaborative team member 
  • Excellent communications skills, both oral and written
  • Basic computer skills including familiarity with word processing, database, and Internet

Kitchen Helper:

  • Completion of high school or equivalent
  • At least 1-2 years experience as a kitchen helper or line cook
  • Energetic and self-directed, with effective time management and organizational skills including the ability to deal with several priorities at the same time
  • Good common sense and willingness to work as a collaborative team member
  • Well developed interpersonal, conflict resolution and negotiating skills
  • Excellent communications skills, both oral and written
